A short Description of the Directorate of Primary Education of Western Thessaloniki.

The Directorate of Primary Education of Western Thessaloniki is an education organization under the umbrella of the Greek Ministry of Education, Life-Long Learning and Religion and belongs to the Prefecture of Primary and Secondary Education of Central Macedonia.

It is in charge of 238 Nursery schools of general education, 2 Nursery schools for students with special needs, 174 Primary schools of general education, 4 Primary schools for students with special needs, 4 Intercultural Primary schools, 1 Pilot school and 3 schools in public hospitals for students suffering from a lingering illness who need in-hospital treatment. More than 4.700 teachers of all disciplines are appointed and over 45.563 students are enrolled.

It is one of the largest education organizations in Greece – responsible for schools and teachers. Its task is to co-ordinate, supplement, back up and implement the educational policies of the Ministry, along with supervising the implementation of various education projects, like European projects, in schools.

Head of the Directorate since August 2010 is Dr. Konstantinos Kontogiannidis. One of his primary goals is to reinforce the educational process in schools within his jurisdiction; therefore his plans include the establishment of a European Project department within the Directorate. The department monitors in a more organized basis the results of already existing European projects and provides assistance to schools wishing to participate to European projects.

The last two years main aim of the Directorate is to find, organize and practice innovative projects in all schools. A special office run by Mr Kostas Vasileiou cares for the promotion and the coordination of European Projects as well as for all the innovative international projects. With the support of the department of Pedagogical Issues run by Mrs Christina Mentziou and many other initiatives the Directorate search for innovative European and international good practices and works cooperatively with many other countries that share the same aims.

Some of our duties include:

  • Timely and accurate shipping of textbooks to school units
  • Intercession for acquiring school equipment
  • Ensuring an adequate number of teachers for smooth school operation
  • Placement, posting, transfer and reposition of teachers
  • Co-operation with the municipal authorities, regarding school building concerns
  • Student Registration and Transfer
  • The ensuring of specialized personnel for students with special educational needs
  • School Units concerns
